Snoring and Sleep Apnoea...

Snoring and Sleep Apnoea
In sleep relaxes the muscles of the upper airway . The airways become flabby and vibrate during breathing in the air stream. The result is the sawing noise. Every second man and every fourth woman snores. The likelihood of snoring at night, increases with age. Even obesity, an enlarged uvula or a flabby soft palate and problems with nasal breathing and a thickened posterior end of the tongue favor snoring.

Because the snorer usually breathes with open mouth, he often suffers from dry mouth in the morning, husky voice, difficulty in swallowing and a feeling of a lump in the throat. Studies show that snoring is the most important symptom for the pathological narrowing of the upper airway. Often it comes with nightly interruptions in breathing, apnea , or with increased work of breathing against increased airway resistance, UARS , accompanied.

Both caused a shallow sleep, leading to daytime fatigue and headaches. Long-term rise as the risk for high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

Snoring is as loud as the noise level in a canteen, or even as a passing thundering trucks with 65 to 90 decibels. Demonstrably leads to the sleeping partner stress reactions during sleep. Rare snoring after a boozy night is safe usually.

Increased Breathing Resistance - UARS
When snoring is forcing our airways and constrict the breathing muscles to work harder. Here, the airway resistance can be up to ten times compared to the normal respiration rise. Sleep is for physical exertion.

This disease is called upper airway resistance syndrome UARS, in German: syndrome of increased breathing resistance.

The high respiratory effort of sleep is repeatedly interrupted briefly, the quality of sleep is poor. Morning headaches and daytime sleepiness are often the consequence , but to be poor concentration and feeling "whacked" even though the sleep time was normal.

Due to the high work of breathing heart and circulation are more heavily loaded. UARS often affects younger, normal-weight men. Progresses, the disease continues to advance, it comes to obstructive sleep apnea

Nocturnal Breathing Disorders
Central Sleep Apnea Syndrome:
The central apnea is not due to snoring. It refers to a respiratory arrest during sleep due to neurological disorders or altered respiratory reflexes. In addition to substance abuse can also stay at high altitude favoring central respiratory stops.

Cheyne-Stokes respiration:
Thereby changing the tidal volume during sleep, is spirally weaker, then stronger. It occurs in neurological diseases, but also in heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias.

Restless Legs Syndrome Restless Legs Syndrome:
The legs of the sleeper move involuntarily falling asleep and during sleep. Restless legs cause falling asleep and staying asleep, frequent in dialysis patients with renal insufficiency. This can sometimes be alleviated by dopamine.

Periodic limb movement disorder: syndrome of periodic limb movement:
Sleep-related movement disorder where the patients sleep with the legs, arms or even twitch sometimes stretch and flex their joints periodically. Sleep is flatter. The causes are not yet clear, the diagnosis takes place in the sleep laboratory . Dopamine antagonists may improve the clinical picture.

Stop breathing - obstructive sleep apnea
When the airways during sleep sag so much that they close themselves, creates a respite, an apnea . As a result of the great tries respiratory muscle, the diaphragm, with increased respiratory effort to overcome the collapse. Sleeping partner notice the breath-hold with a sudden silence. In this phase, the oxygen content in the blood decreases, the brain is poorly supplied. To prevent suffocation, it is vital for arousal (arousal). Finally, the sleeper wakes up, gasping for breath, then breathed with difficulty, until the next respite ... The natural sequence of stages of sleep is disturbed, the patient suffers from daytime sleepiness, fatigue, or morning headaches. The pauses in breathing can last up to two minutes, for the sleeping partner a painfully long time for the cycle a massive load. The sleeper himself does not remember the next morning most of the brief awakening.

Sequelae in snorers
Recent research shows as sequelae of obstructive sleep apnea and upper airway resistance syndrome :

  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
  • Art hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Inflammatory processes in the vessel walls
  • Increased clotting tendency of the blood
  • Heart attack
  • Apoplexy
  • Sudden cardiac death
  • Type II diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes)
  • Overweight
The common occurrence of these diseases and breathing problems during sleep is by no means accidental, as was long believed. Rather, the emergence of these diseases is due to apnea and UARS favors. With up to 20 million snorers spreads here straight from a widespread disease with unpredictable consequences for the entire health system. early detection and treatment can prevent this.

Snoring in Children
Greatly enlarged adenoids ("polyps") as well as the tonsils can cause considerable problems children. As a mechanical obstacle they constrict the airways causing snoring and pauses in breathing apnea with decreased oxygen supply.

The children are sleep deprived, distracted and overexcited. Your sense of taste and smell is impaired, some have little appetite, suffer from failure to thrive. The tendency to middle ear infections, associated with deafness added. This can lead to delays in language development. Often removal of the throat and tonsils are advised by medical specialists.

The former practice of tonsillectomy with several days of hospitalization and severe pain in swallowing heard in the past. We use a gentle minimally invasive procedure, the coblation . With this operation, tonsillar and adenoid tissue are removed (an engagement with reduced risk and no more blood loss).
